Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between trade-in value and private-party value?
Private-party value is what a private seller can reasonably expect from another individual buyer. Trade-in value is what a dealer will offer you - typically 10-20% less because the dealer must inspect, recondition, market, and profit from reselling the car. The gap is the price of convenience: a trade is fast, handled at the dealership, and often tax-advantaged in states that reduce taxable purchase price by the trade-in amount.
How does condition affect trade-in value?
Condition is one of the biggest value drivers. In this calculator, moving from "good" to "excellent" adds about 7% of market value; moving from "good" to "fair" removes about 11%. Dealers grade strictly - they look for dents, scratches, stains, worn tires, cracked windshields, and service history gaps. A car you rate "excellent" is often graded "good" by dealers. Honest self-assessment gives a more accurate estimate.
Does trading in provide a tax benefit?
In most US states, your trade-in value is subtracted from the purchase price before calculating sales tax on the new vehicle. If you buy a $30,000 car and trade in a $10,000 vehicle, you only pay sales tax on $20,000. In a state with 8% sales tax, that saves $800. This tax benefit partially offsets the lower trade-in price versus a private sale.
When is selling privately worth it versus trading in?
Selling privately typically nets 10-20% more than a trade-in but requires time for listing, showing, negotiating, and paperwork - often 2-6 weeks and dozens of messages. It is worth it for valuable cars ($15,000+) where the gap is large in absolute dollars. For lower-value cars or when you need to move quickly, the convenience of a trade-in or instant-cash-offer service may outweigh the extra money.
