Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between power and energy?
Power is the rate of energy use (energy per unit time). Watts measure power; watt-hours measure energy. This converter handles power units only; do not confuse it with an energy converter.
How many watts is one horsepower?
Mechanical (imperial) horsepower = 745.7 W; metric horsepower (PS/CV) = 735.5 W. They are close but not identical, which matters for car and motor specs.
What is BTU per hour?
A power unit common in heating and air conditioning. 1 watt ≈ 3.412 BTU/hour, so a 12,000 BTU/hr ("1-ton") AC unit is about 3,517 W of cooling power.
What about kVA?
kVA is apparent power in AC systems; kW is real power. They are equal only at a power factor of 1. This tool converts real power (W/kW/hp/BTU·h⁻¹); kVA needs the power factor and is noted separately.
