How This Calculator Works

Since the EIP-1559 upgrade, an Ethereum transaction's fee is gas units × (base fee + priority fee), with both price terms quoted in gwei (1 gwei = 10⁻⁹ ETH = one billionth of an ether). The gas limit is how much computational work the transaction performs - a fixed 21,000 for a plain transfer, more for contract calls. The base fee is an algorithmic price the network sets from recent block fullness and then burns (permanently removes from supply). The priority fee, or "tip", is what you add to bid for faster inclusion; it goes to the validator. This tool multiplies gas × per-gas price to get total gwei, divides by 1,000,000,000 to convert to ETH, then multiplies by the ETH price for a USD figure.

Worked Example

A simple ETH transfer consumes exactly 21,000 gas. With a base fee of 20 gwei and a 2 gwei tip, the effective per-gas price is 20 + 2 = 22 gwei. Total = 21,000 × 22 = 462,000 gwei. Convert: 462,000 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 0.000462 ETH. At an ETH price of $3,000 that is 0.000462 × 3,000 ≈ $1.39. Run the same conditions through a DEX swap at ~150,000 gas: 150,000 × 22 = 3,300,000 gwei = 0.0033 ETH ≈ $9.90 - roughly 7× the transfer, because gas units scale with contract complexity even when the gas price is identical.

Real-World Use

Estimating before signing answers the practical questions: is this trade worth it after fees, should I batch several actions into one transaction, should I wait for a quieter block (weekend/overnight gas is often a fraction of peak), or should I route through a Layer 2 where the equivalent operation frequently costs cents rather than dollars? Active DeFi users check this on every interaction because a $40 swap fee can erase the edge on a small position entirely.

Common Mistakes

Confusing gas limit with gas price. The limit is units of work; only the price (gwei) drives cost. A successful transaction is charged for gas used, not the full limit - over-setting the limit is a safety margin, not extra cost.

Setting the priority fee too low. A negligible tip during congestion can leave a transaction pending for hours or get it dropped from the mempool.

Forgetting the base fee floats. It can spike 5–20× during a hyped NFT drop or a volatile market move, turning a $2 action into a $40 one within minutes.

Assuming a failed transaction is free. A reverted transaction still consumes (and charges) the gas it used before failing.

Limitations

Preset gas amounts are typical approximations; actual usage varies with the specific contract, call data size, and storage writes, and complex multi-hop DeFi interactions can exceed them substantially.
