Generator Sizing Calculator

Size a backup generator from appliance running and starting watts, with 20% headroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need the 20% headroom?

Running a generator at 100% capacity accelerates engine wear, clips voltage, and provides no margin for additional loads. Most manufacturers recommend staying below 80% of rated wattage for continuous operation.

Can I connect the generator to my home's panel?

Only with a proper transfer switch or interlock kit installed by a licensed electrician. Direct connection without a transfer switch back-feeds power onto utility lines, which can electrocute workers and is illegal.

How long will a gas generator run on a tank?

A typical 5 kW portable generator holds about 4-8 gallons and runs 8-12 hours at half load. Heavy load reduces runtime. Always shut down to add fuel - never refuel a hot generator.

What about altitude derating?

Generators lose about 3% power per 1,000 ft of elevation. At 5,000 ft, a 5 kW generator delivers about 4.25 kW. Size up if you are at high altitude.
