Running Calorie Calculator

Estimate gross and net calories burned running from distance or time, with pace and weight scaling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does running a mile burn?

A widely cited estimate is about 100 kcal per mile for a 150 lb (68 kg) runner, but it scales with weight: roughly 0.63 kcal per kg per mile gross, or 0.9 kcal/kg/km. Heavier runners burn proportionally more.

What is the difference between gross and net calories?

Gross is total energy used during the run (about 1.036 kcal/kg/km). Net subtracts the resting calories you would have burned anyway (about 0.9 kcal/kg/km), which better reflects the true cost of the run for weight management.

Does running speed change calories per mile?

Only modestly. Per-mile cost is fairly constant across paces - running a mile burns roughly the same whether fast or slow. Faster running burns more per minute but covers the mile in less time, which largely offsets.

Does incline or treadmill change the estimate?

Yes, uphill running raises cost a lot, while a flat treadmill set to 1% grade roughly approximates outdoor flat running. For incline-specific numbers use a treadmill calculator with the ACSM equations.
