Lawn Mowing Time Calculator

Estimate mowing time from lawn area, mower deck width, travel speed, and an efficiency factor for turns and overlap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What efficiency factor should I use?

Open, rectangular lawns with few obstacles reach 80-90%. Yards with trees, beds, and tight corners drop to 60-70% because of constant turning, repositioning, and trimming. Time your first mow and use the back-calculated efficiency as your personal baseline for that property.

Faster or wider: which reduces mowing time more?

Both scale the effective rate linearly, so doubling speed and doubling deck width each cut the time in half. In practice, a wider deck is usually the better investment because it also reduces the number of passes and turns, which compounds the time savings beyond the simple linear calculation.

Why does my real time exceed the estimate?

Trimming, emptying the bag, refueling, and re-cutting missed strips all add up. Treat the calculator's figure as the bare mowing pass, then add your own fixed overhead for trimmer work, edging, and cleanup.

Does mowing pattern affect time?

Long straight passes with few turns hit the higher efficiency end. Checkerboard or striped patterns look great but add more turns and lower effective efficiency. The most time-efficient pattern is usually parallel strips mowed in the direction of the longest dimension of the lawn.
