Where do my target N-P-K numbers come from?

A soil test. The lab reports which nutrients are deficient and recommends pounds per 1,000 sq ft. Submit a sample from several locations in the area you plan to fertilize, mix them together, and follow the lab's rate recommendation - that number goes directly into this calculator.

Why blend instead of buying a pre-mixed bag?

Pre-mixed bags lock you into a fixed ratio. If your soil is already rich in phosphorus, a bag labeled 10-10-10 forces you to apply P you do not need every time you apply N. Blending single-source products lets you add only what is deficient, which is cheaper and reduces runoff risk.

Can I set a target to zero?

Yes. If your soil test shows adequate phosphorus, enter 0 for the P target and the calculator omits product B from the blend entirely. The same applies to K. You can even target only one nutrient if the others are already sufficient.

What about micronutrients like iron, sulfur, or magnesium?

This tool covers the primary macronutrients (N-P-K) only. Secondary and micronutrient deficiencies show up in a complete soil test and are corrected with specific amendments - gypsum for calcium and sulfur, sulfate of potash-magnesia for magnesium and sulfur, chelated iron for iron chlorosis. Address those separately once the macronutrient blend is established.

How This Calculator Works

Bagged fertilizers rarely match the exact N-P-K ratio a soil test calls for, so growers blend two or three single-purpose products - a nitrogen source, a phosphorus source, and a potassium source - to hit a target. This calculator takes your desired pounds of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P₂O₅), and potassium (K₂O) per 1,000 square feet, scales them to your actual area, and works out how many pounds of each product to weigh out. It solves the blend in a sensible order: the P source covers the phosphorus, the K source covers the potassium, and the N source tops up whatever nitrogen the P product did not already supply. It then reports the actual nutrients delivered so you can confirm the mix lands on target before anything goes on the ground.

Understanding N-P-K Labels

The three numbers on every fertilizer bag - for example 46-0-0 or 18-46-0 - are the percent by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅), and potash (K₂O) respectively. These are oxide forms, not elemental P and K. Soil tests sometimes report elemental phosphorus and potassium, while bag labels always use oxide forms, so be careful when comparing test results to bag percentages.

46-0-0 (Urea): pure nitrogen source, highest N density available
18-46-0 (DAP - Diammonium Phosphate): primary phosphorus source that also contributes significant nitrogen
0-0-60 (Muriate of Potash): concentrated potassium source with no N or P

Single-source products allow precise correction of one deficiency at a time, which is both more economical and less likely to over-apply a nutrient your soil already has in abundance.

Blend Calculation Method

The calculator solves the blend sequentially, which mirrors how agronomists work through a prescription:

Scale all per-1,000 sq ft rates to the actual area using: factor = area ÷ 1,000
Phosphorus source supplies all P: lb product B = lb P needed ÷ (B's P fraction)
Potassium source supplies all K: lb product C = lb K needed ÷ (C's K fraction)
Nitrogen contributed by the P source = lb B × B's N fraction
N source tops up remaining nitrogen: lb product A = (lb N needed - N from B) ÷ (A's N fraction)
Delivered nutrients are back-calculated from the actual pounds selected

Zero or negative targets are accepted - if your soil is rich in phosphorus, set the P target to 0 and product B is simply omitted from the blend. If remaining N is zero or negative after the P source contribution, product A is also omitted.

Worked Example

Target 1 lb N, 0.5 lb P, 0.5 lb K per 1,000 sq ft over 1,000 sq ft, using urea (46-0-0), DAP (18-46-0), and muriate of potash (0-0-60).

P first: 0.5 ÷ 0.46 ≈ 1.09 lb DAP, which also brings 1.09 × 0.18 ≈ 0.20 lb N
K: 0.5 ÷ 0.60 ≈ 0.83 lb muriate
Remaining N = 1 - 0.20 = 0.80 lb, so urea = 0.80 ÷ 0.46 ≈ 1.74 lb
Total blend ≈ 3.66 lb delivering ~1.0 lb N, 0.5 lb P, 0.5 lb K

Soil Testing and Application Tips

A soil test is the foundation of rational fertilizer management. Without one, you are guessing which nutrients are short and which are already at adequate or excess levels. Phosphorus in particular accumulates in soils with a history of heavy manure or compost application - adding more to a P-saturated soil wastes money and can contribute to runoff into waterways.

Practical application tips:

Never apply more than about 1 lb of fast-release nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft at once - split applications several weeks apart to reduce burn risk and leaching
Calibrate your spreader by weighing output over a measured strip before treating the whole field
Split the blend into two passes at right angles for the most even coverage
Water in soluble nitrogen (urea, ammonium) within 24 hours to prevent volatilization and leaf burn
Keep blends dry and in closed containers until use - moisture can cause products to bind and flow unevenly

Forgetting that the P and K numbers on a bag are P₂O₅ and K₂O, not elemental P and K - soil tests sometimes report one form and bags the other
