Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standard sod pallet size?
Most US sod farms ship pallets covering 450 square feet (50 pieces of 2 × 4.5 ft rolls, or 45 pieces of 2 × 5 ft rolls). Some farms ship 504 sq ft or 400 sq ft pallets. Always confirm the pallet size with your supplier before using the calculator estimate for ordering.
How long can sod sit on the pallet before I must install it?
In moderate weather (below 75°F), 24 hours is the general guideline. In hot weather above 85°F, grass stacked on a pallet heats rapidly and can yellow and die within 12-18 hours. Never leave pallets in direct sun - stack them in shade, keep the pallet moist, and install as quickly as possible. If installation is delayed by rain, unroll the sod and lay it loosely on a flat shaded surface with access to moisture.
Should I fertilize when laying sod?
Yes - incorporate a starter fertilizer (high in phosphorus to encourage root development) into the top inch of soil before laying, or use a granular phosphorus product on the prepared soil surface. Do not apply high-nitrogen fertilizer at planting time; it encourages top growth at the expense of root establishment. Switch to regular lawn fertilizer once the sod has rooted (typically 3-4 weeks after installation).
Can I lay sod over existing grass?
No. Laying sod over existing vegetation creates a mat layer that prevents the new sod roots from reaching soil. The existing grass and thatch decompose slowly and unevenly, creating soft spots and an uneven surface. Always remove or kill existing vegetation and prepare bare soil before laying sod.
