Square Foot Garden Calculator

Calculate grid cells and total plants for a square-foot garden bed from its size and crop spacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix different crops in the same bed?

Yes - mixing crops is the heart of the square-foot method. Assign each square its own crop and density, and you get a diverse, pest-confusing patchwork in a tiny footprint. Interplanting tall and short crops, sun-lovers and shade-tolerant crops, and fast and slow growers maximizes yield and visual interest.

What about vining crops like cucumbers or squash?

Vining crops borrow neighbouring squares or extend onto a trellis. The per-square count reflects in-cell footprint only. A cucumbers vine planted in one square will grow onto adjacent squares or up a vertical trellis. Account for its spread when assigning nearby squares, or plan a trellis along one edge to train vines upward rather than across the bed.

Why does the calculator use whole feet for bed dimensions?

The square-foot system grids in whole 1-ft squares. A bed that is 4.5 ft wide produces 4 full squares of width - the last 6 inches is excluded from the grid count. If your bed is sized in non-whole feet, round down to the nearest whole foot for the grid calculation.

How do I prevent disease buildup in an intensive bed?

Rotate plant families across squares each season so the same family does not occupy the same square two years running. This prevents soil-borne diseases (tomato blight, club root in brassicas) from concentrating in one spot. The grid makes rotation easy to track - keep a simple sketch of what went where each year.
