Why does my seed packet say to plant more densely?

What if I have more bed space than plants needed?

Enter the bed length and spacing to see actual bed capacity. If the bed fits more plants than your target, you can either reduce your seed purchase for this sowing or fill the extra space with a succession sowing of the same or a different crop. Never leave productive bed space empty during the growing season if you have seeds available.

How do I store leftover seed?

Store in a sealed container (jar with lid, resealable bag) in a cool, dry, dark location. The refrigerator or a cool basement works well - low temperature and low humidity are the two key factors. Label each packet with the crop name, variety, and year purchased. Most vegetable seeds are viable for 2-4 years under good storage conditions; alliums (onions, leeks) are shorter-lived at 1-2 years.

What is the bed capacity calculation useful for?

It tells you whether your planned row length and spacing can physically fit all the plants your target requires. How This Calculator Works

Not every seed you plant will germinate, and not every seedling that sprouts will be kept to harvest. This calculator accounts for both factors: germination rate tells you what fraction of seeds will sprout, and the thinning factor tells you how many seeds you plant per final plant slot (allowing you to thin to the strongest seedling). The core formula is: seeds to plant = ceiling((target plants × thinning factor) ÷ germination rate). Ceiling rounding ensures you never plant fewer seeds than needed to hit your target. The optional bed capacity calculation tells you whether your row length and spacing can accommodate all the plants you plan to grow.

Germination Rates by Crop

Germination rate is the percentage of seeds from a given lot that will successfully sprout under good conditions. Most commercial vegetable seed packets list a tested germination rate on the label. Typical ranges:

Radish, bean, pea: 85-95% - very reliable, minimal adjustment needed

Tomato, cucumber, squash, kale: 80-90% - good; plant 10-20% extra as a buffer

Pepper, beet: 70-80% - moderate; worth planting more per spot

Carrot: 60-75% - lower than most; plant generously and plan to thin

Old or improperly stored seed: often 50% or less - test before committing a whole bed

Germination rates decline with seed age. Most vegetable seeds remain viable for 2-4 years when stored cool and dry. Do a germination test on old seed: place 10 seeds on a damp paper towel, seal in a plastic bag at room temperature, and count sprouts after the crop's typical germination period.

Thinning Factor: Why Plant More Than You Need

The thinning factor is the number of seeds you plant at each final-plant location. For crops that are directly seeded in the garden, planting 2-3 seeds per spot and thinning to the strongest seedling is standard practice:

Covers the chance that some seeds fail to germinate or are eaten by soil insects

Lets you select the strongest, most vigorous seedling at each location rather than settling for the only one that came up

For slow-germinating crops like carrots and parsley, a thin spot at germination cannot be fixed once you have missed the window

For transplants (tomatoes, peppers started indoors), the thinning factor is 1 because each cell in a seedling tray produces one plant and thinning happens in the tray, not the garden. The germination rate still applies to indoor starting trays.

Direct Seeding vs. Transplanting

The right approach depends on the crop and your climate:

Always direct seed: carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips, beans, peas, corn - these crops resent root disturbance or establish so quickly that indoor starting offers no benefit

Always transplant: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant - slow to maturity; an indoor start extends the effective growing season significantly

Either works: lettuce, kale, broccoli, cabbage, squash, cucumbers - transplanting extends the season in cold climates; direct seeding is fine in warm climates with long seasons

For transplants, the seeds are sown in individual cells or flats indoors. The germination rate in the calculator still applies to the indoor sowing - if a cell fails to germinate, you need replacement plants. Plan for 5-10% extra seedlings in your flat to cover cells that do not germinate.

Succession Planting for Continuous Harvest

Rather than sowing your entire seed quantity at once, staggering plantings every 2-3 weeks spreads the harvest over a longer window and prevents the glut-and-famine cycle common in first-year gardens:

For a continuous lettuce harvest, divide your calculated seed quantity across 4-6 sowings, 2 weeks apart

Beans and radishes mature in 45-60 days - three or four successions of the same bed area can triple the effective harvest season

Root vegetables like carrots can be sown every 3 weeks from early spring through midsummer for harvest from early summer to first frost
