Steps to Calories Calculator

Convert your daily step count into calories burned using body weight, height, and walking pace via stride-length estimation and the MET formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the calculator need height to estimate calories?

Height is used to estimate stride length, which converts steps into distance. Without a stride estimate, the tool cannot compute how long the walk took at your selected pace, and therefore cannot apply the MET formula. Taller people have longer strides and cover more distance per step, changing both the time and the calorie calculation.

Is there a difference between steps counted on a treadmill vs outdoors?

The treadmill provides a controlled speed input, making pace selection straightforward. Outdoor steps may involve varying terrain, grades, and wind, which this calculator cannot fully account for. On balance, outdoor walking at the same flat-ground speed tends to burn slightly more calories due to proprioceptive adjustments and minor terrain variations.

How do I interpret the calories burned number for weight loss?

A deficit of 3,500 kcal in accumulated net extra calories corresponds to approximately 0.45 kg (1 lb) of body fat over time. If walking adds a genuine net extra 300-400 kcal per day beyond what you were doing before, that accumulates to roughly 1 lb of loss every 9-12 days, assuming no compensatory increase in food intake.

Does this calculator work for running steps?

No. The stride length formula and MET values are calibrated for walking. Running lengthens stride substantially and uses much higher METs (8-12 for typical running speeds). Using this calculator for running steps will underestimate both distance and calories significantly.
