How It Works

Hardship Duty Pay (HDP) is a monthly entitlement paid to service members assigned to designated hardship locations, missions, or operational tempos. There are three distinct types. HDP-L (Location) compensates members assigned to areas where living conditions are substantially below the U.S. standard, paid at $50, $100, or $150 per month depending on the locality's tier. HDP-M (Mission) is a flat $150/month paid for participation in specifically designated arduous missions such as mortuary operations or remote sensor work. HDP-T (Tempo) was reauthorized to compensate members for sustained operational tempo - typically 220 or more days deployed in 365 - paid at roughly $495/month.

Eligibility

HDP eligibility depends on the type claimed. General criteria include:

HDP-L: assignment to a DoD-designated hardship location on the semi-annual list (see DoD FMR Vol 7A Ch 17).

HDP-M: assignment to a specific mission type designated by the service secretary.

HDP-T: exceeding 220 days deployed in a 365-day period (entitlement begins on the month after the threshold is crossed).

All three types are available to Reserve and Guard members on qualifying active-duty orders.

HDP-L, HDP-M, and HDP-T may be received concurrently - they are not mutually exclusive.

Tips

HDP is separate from Imminent Danger Pay (IDP) - you can receive both HDP-L and IDP in the same month if the location qualifies for both.

Verify the current designated-location list before assuming your duty station qualifies for HDP-L - many OCONUS posts (Germany, UK, Japan main islands) do not qualify.

HDP-T back-pay starts from the month after you cross the 220-day threshold, not from day 1 of the deployment.

HDP-M is prorated for days actually working the qualifying mission, not just days on TDY orders.

HDP does not count toward the High-3 retirement base - only base pay does.
