What if my spouse promotes out of eligible grades mid-course?

MyCAA can continue paying for the current Financial Assistance period, but no new FA documents will be issued after the promotion to an ineligible grade.

Are licensing exam fees covered?

Yes - when bundled with an approved training program and listed on the Education and Training Plan.

Can MyCAA and a Pell Grant be combined?

Yes - MyCAA is layered on top of any federal aid and does not count as income for FAFSA purposes.

Does MyCAA cover textbooks?

Tuition and required fees yes - textbooks, supplies, and equipment are generally NOT covered by MyCAA.

Which schools accept MyCAA?

How It Works

My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) is a DoD scholarship program that pays up to $4,000 lifetime (capped at $2,000 per fiscal year) for portable career training for eligible military spouses. Eligible spouses are those married to active-duty service members in pay grades E-1 through E-6, W-1 through W-2, and O-1 through O-3 (including activated Guard and Reserve in those grades).

Funded training must lead to a license, certification, or associate degree in a portable career field. This calculator tracks what MyCAA will cover for a specific course given how much of the lifetime and fiscal-year caps the spouse has already used.

Eligibility

MyCAA eligibility is based on the active-duty service member's pay grade and the type of training. Key criteria include:

Spouse must be married to an active-duty member in grades E-1 to E-6, W-1 to W-2, or O-1 to O-3.

Spouses of E-7+, W-3+, and O-4+ service members are NOT eligible, regardless of financial need.

Training must lead to a portable career license, certification, or associate degree in an approved field.

Funding is direct to the school - MyCAA cannot reimburse spouses who pay out of pocket first.

An approved Education and Training Plan (ETP) is required before any Financial Assistance document can be issued.

Tips

The DoD fiscal year runs October 1 through September 30. A spouse who paces training across two fiscal years can draw the full $4,000 lifetime cap by spending $2,000 before September 30 and $2,000 after October 1.

Unused fiscal-year cap does NOT carry forward to the next year - use it or lose it each fiscal year.

MyCAA and federal student aid (Pell Grant, loans) can be used together - MyCAA is layered on top and does not count as income for FAFSA purposes.

If the service member promotes out of eligible grades mid-course, existing Financial Assistance documents continue, but new ones cannot be issued after the promotion.
