Chord Transposer Calculator

Transpose notes and chords up or down by any number of semitones on the chromatic scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many semitones is a whole step?

Two semitones. One semitone is a half step, the smallest interval on a piano keyboard.

Why might my sharps become flats in the output?

The output respects the accidental toggle, so the same pitch can appear as A# or Bb depending on your choice.

Does it transpose the chord quality too?

No - only the root moves. Suffixes like m7 or sus4 stay attached so the chord type is preserved.

How do I find the right capo position for a key change?

Count the semitones between your desired key and the original. Enter the chords, set semitones to that number, and play the resulting chords with a capo at that fret.

What if the parser does not recognise my chord symbol?

Keep the root first (e.g. Cmaj7, Dm7, F#sus4) and avoid spaces within a chord symbol. Unrecognised tokens are passed through unchanged.
