Speaker Box Volume Calculator

Compute loudspeaker enclosure internal volume in liters and cubic feet from external dimensions, panel thickness, and driver displacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why subtract panel thickness twice per axis?

There is a wall at each end of every dimension. A 0.75-inch panel reduces width, height, and depth each by 1.5 inches total.

How precise does the net volume need to be?

Aim within about 5% of the driver's recommended Vb. Larger errors shift the bass tuning frequency and system Q audibly.

Does acoustic stuffing change the effective volume?

Polyfill makes a sealed box behave acoustically a little larger by slowing the air inside, effectively adding a few percent to the apparent volume.

Should I choose a sealed or ported enclosure?

Sealed boxes are smaller, tighter, and forgiving of volume error. Ported boxes go lower and louder but are sensitive to exact net volume and port tuning.

What if I do not know the driver displacement?

Estimate 0.05-0.10 ft3 for small drivers with a port, more for large subwoofers. Water displacement of the actual basket gives an accurate measurement if precision matters.
