Cat Litter Usage and Cost Calculator

Estimate how much cat litter you use per month and year, and what it costs, based on cat count and litter type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I completely change the litter box?

For clumping clay, fully dump and scrub the box every 2-4 weeks even with daily scooping. For non-clumping clay, every 3-7 days. For silica crystal, every 2-4 weeks with daily stirring. With multiple cats, shorten these intervals proportionally since the box soils faster. Always wash with unscented soap - strong cleaners can deter sensitive cats.

Is silica crystal litter cheaper than clumping clay in the long run?

Often yes, despite a higher per-bag price. Crystal litter absorbs far more per pound and lasts much longer between full changes. For a single-cat household, the lower usage volume (about 4 lb/month vs. 10 lb/month for clumping clay) can offset the price premium. Run the numbers with your specific bag prices using this calculator to compare annual costs directly.

How many litter boxes does a two-cat household need?

The standard guideline is one box per cat plus one extra - so three boxes for two cats. This prevents one cat from guarding or claiming all resources, reduces competition stress, and ensures a clean option is always available. Place boxes in different rooms or at least different areas of the house to give each cat a private option.

Why is my cat suddenly avoiding the litter box?

The most common reasons are a dirty box, a recent change in litter type, a box that is too small, a location that feels unsafe or too exposed, or a medical issue such as a urinary tract infection, bladder crystals, or constipation. If eliminating outside the box is a new behavior and the box is kept clean, consult a veterinarian to rule out a medical cause before addressing it as a behavioral problem.
