Panorama Overlap Calculator

Plan a stitched panorama: number of shots, rotation step, and per-frame field of view for any lens and overlap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much overlap do I really need?

For most lenses 25-35% overlap is sufficient. At the wide end (below 24 mm) or with highly repetitive textures (clear sky, water), increase to 40-50% so the stitcher finds enough matching features.

What is the no-parallax point?

The point inside the lens where light rays converge before hitting the sensor. Rotating around it eliminates parallax shift between foreground and background elements. It is different from the physical center of the lens barrel.

Does this work for fisheye lenses?

No - fisheye lenses use equidistant projection, not rectilinear, so the arctan formula over- or under-estimates the true FOV. You need fisheye-specific stitching software and a different planning approach.

Can I shoot a panorama handheld?

Yes for simple landscapes without close foreground elements. For architecture, interiors with near objects, or any precise work, a dedicated panoramic head eliminates parallax errors that are impossible to correct in post.
