Frequently Asked Questions
What does the W-4 withholding calculator do?
It estimates the federal income tax that should be withheld from each paycheck and how much extra withholding to enter on Form W-4 line 4(c) so you finish the year near a zero refund or balance due.
Does it include Social Security and Medicare?
No. It estimates only federal income tax withholding. Social Security (6.2 percent) and Medicare (1.45 percent) are withheld separately at fixed rates and are not changed by your W-4.
What about state withholding?
This tool covers federal withholding only. Many states have their own withholding form and rates, so check your state requirements separately.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a general estimate based on 2025 figures and is not tax, financial, or legal advice. Confirm with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or a tax professional.
