Frequently Asked Questions
Flat cut vs. nested - which is better?
Nesting needs only a miter setting and is foolproof on short pieces. Cutting flat with a compound setting is the only practical way for wide crown that will not fit nested.
How do I find the spring angle?
Set the crown into a framing square against a flat surface and read where the back face touches. Most stock crown is either 38 or 45 degrees.
What about outside corners?
Outside corners use the same magnitude angles; only the saw direction and which side is the keeper change. Glue, pin, and caulk them.
Should I cope inside corners?
For paint-grade work in most homes, yes. Coped joints are invisible across seasonal movement and wall irregularities that mitered joints would open.
Why does the calculator give a nested miter too?
The nested miter is simply 90 degrees minus half the corner angle. It is the simpler method that needs only a standard chop-saw setting.
