Dust Collection CFM Calculator

Find the required dust-collection CFM from duct diameter and target velocity, and check whether your collector delivers enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CFM does each machine need?

Rough targets: small sander 350-400 CFM, table saw 400-500, bandsaw 400-600, planer or jointer 600-800+ CFM.

Why 4000 fpm?

It is the empirically established velocity that keeps wood chips suspended in horizontal duct runs. Below it, chips drop out and pack the pipe until it clogs.

What is the difference between a single-stage and a cyclone system?

A single-stage dumps everything into one bag. A cyclone separates chips into a bottom bin before fine dust reaches the filter, extending filter life.

Can I use a shop vac instead of a dust collector?

Shop vacs are high-static, low-volume devices - ideal for small ports on routers and sanders, but inadequate for planers and jointers that need high-volume airflow.

Does pipe diameter matter more than collector size?

Both matter, but pipe diameter is often the limiting factor. Stepping from 4-inch to 6-inch main carries roughly 2.25 times the air volume at the same velocity.
