Frequently Asked Questions
Should I mark gaps or centers?
Mark centers with the on-center figure. Measuring gap-by-gap accumulates small errors across the run.
What is the difference between flush ends and end gaps?
Flush ends means the first and last items butt against the endpoints with gaps only between items. End gaps mean a gap also appears at each end.
Can I use this for tile or fence pickets?
Yes - any repeated element of uniform thickness across a fixed length. Keep all dimensions in the same unit.
What about code limits for baluster spacing?
Many codes require baluster openings to be less than 4 inches. Increase the count until the calculated gap drops below the local limit.
My gap comes out to an awkward decimal. What do I do?
Add or remove one item and recalculate. Often changing the count by one lands on a much cleaner gap.
