Why does moisture content affect weight so much?

Water is dense. Green lumber can be 40-60% heavier than the same board kiln-dried, which is why fresh slabs are so heavy and green-lumber shipping is expensive.

What is a board foot and why does this calculator report it?

A board foot is 144 cubic inches. Hardwood is priced by the board foot, so the tally here helps you budget and compare pricing across species and suppliers.

Are all hardwoods heavier than softwoods?

No. Poplar and mahogany are lighter than some softwoods. Species density matters far more than the hard vs. soft label.

How accurate is the density data?

Values are published averages at approximately 12% MC. Real boards vary with growth rate and conditions. Expect roughly plus or minus 10% on any individual board.

What about engineered wood like LVL or glulam?

Those have manufacturer-published densities you can look up. This calculator uses solid-wood species densities for its preset list.
