A clean knockout bracket needs a power-of-two field, so the bracket size is 2 raised to the ceiling of log-base-2 of N - the smallest power of two that is at least N. Byes = bracketSize − N. Rounds = log-base-2 of bracketSize.

For total matches: single elimination = N − 1 (every player except the champion is eliminated exactly once). Double elimination = 2N − 2 (each of N-1 eliminated players needs 2 losses), plus one extra for a possible bracket reset grand final.
