Frequently Asked Questions

How many steps equal a mile?

At the 0.75 m stride used in this calculator, approximately 2,145 steps equal a mile (1,609 m ÷ 0.75 m). The real figure ranges from about 2,000 steps for tall adults to 2,500 steps for shorter adults, which is why this calculator asks for your weight rather than using a generic conversion.

Why does a heavier person burn more calories for the same steps?

Because the MET formula scales with body weight: Calories = MET × weight (kg) × hours. Moving more mass requires more energy. A 90 kg person burns approximately 50% more calories than a 60 kg person walking the same number of steps at the same pace.

Is the 10,000-step goal right for everyone?

Not necessarily. Research shows that even 6,000-7,000 steps per day provides substantial cardiovascular benefit for older adults. Highly active people may naturally exceed 15,000 steps. Start where you are, add 1,000-2,000 steps per week, and focus on the trend rather than hitting a specific number immediately.

Can I replace gym workouts entirely with daily steps?

Steps are excellent for baseline activity and metabolic health but do not fully replace resistance training (which builds muscle, improves bone density, and prevents functional decline with age) or high-intensity cardio (which drives VO2 max improvements). A combined approach gives the most comprehensive health benefit.
