Frequently Asked Questions
Why do giant breeds need less exercise than large breeds?
Giant breeds (over 90 lb, such as Great Danes, Mastiffs, and Saint Bernards) are prone to joint problems including hip and elbow dysplasia, and they fatigue faster than their size suggests. Long, high-impact sessions on hard surfaces can worsen joint wear. Steady, moderate-intensity activity on varied terrain is better suited to these breeds than extended high-intensity exercise.
Is one long walk per day enough for most dogs?
For most dogs, two shorter walks outperform one long one for behavior and recovery. Splitting exercise into two sessions - morning and evening - provides structure, reduces energy build-up that can lead to destructive behavior, and gives the dog regular mental stimulation throughout the day. That said, some calm adult dogs do fine with one longer outing supplemented by backyard or indoor play.
How do I know if my dog is getting enough exercise?
Signs of insufficient exercise include destructive chewing or digging, excessive barking, restlessness, difficulty settling, jumping on people, and general hyperactivity indoors. Signs of over-exercise include excessive panting lasting more than 10 minutes after stopping, reluctance to continue, lameness, or soreness the following day. The goal is a dog who is pleasantly tired and calm at home without signs of physical strain.
Can I over-exercise my dog?
Yes. Over-exercising is particularly risky for puppies (growth plate damage), brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs - respiratory limitations), and dogs in heat or humidity (heatstroke risk). Even healthy adult dogs can develop repetitive stress injuries from excessive running or jumping on hard surfaces. Vary exercise types, allow rest days, and watch your dog's energy and comfort levels as the primary guide.
