How much water does a dog need per day?
A general guideline is 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day (about 55 ml per kg). A 40 lb dog needs about 40 oz (roughly 5 cups or 1.2 liters) per day under normal conditions. Active or hot conditions increase this by 25% or more.
My dog drinks much more than the calculator shows. Should I be worried?
Excessive thirst (polydipsia) can indicate diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, or other conditions. If your dog is consistently drinking significantly more than usual, schedule a veterinary exam and urinalysis.
Does the type of food affect how much water my dog drinks?
Yes. Dogs eating dry kibble (roughly 10% moisture) must drink more water compared to dogs eating wet or fresh food (which can be 70-80% moisture). The bowl intake will appear lower for dogs on wet food, but total fluid intake can be similar.
Should water always be available?
Yes. Fresh water should be available to your dog at all times. The calculator shows a daily guideline, not a fixed limit. Restricting water access is harmful and can cause dehydration and urinary problems.
