Frequently Asked Questions
What does mg/kg/day mean?
It means milligrams of drug per kilogram of animal body weight per day. For example, 10 mg/kg/day for a 5 kg cat = 50 mg of drug total per day. If given twice daily, each dose is 25 mg. Always confirm whether the prescribed dose is per dose or per day.
How do I convert pounds to kilograms?
Divide the weight in pounds by 2.20462. For example, a 22 lb dog weighs 22 ÷ 2.20462 = 9.98 kg, which you would round to 10 kg. The calculator performs this conversion automatically when you select 'lb' as the unit.
What if the calculation gives a partial tablet?
Many veterinary tablets are scored for splitting in half or quarters. Never split unscored tablets or capsules without veterinary guidance - some medications should not be divided (extended-release formulas, for example). Ask your veterinarian or pharmacist whether splitting is appropriate and how to store partial doses.
What should I do if I think I gave too much medication?
Contact your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately. You can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply). Do not induce vomiting without veterinary guidance.
