Frequently Asked Questions
What is the L/360 rule?
It is a visual-acceptability convention: span divided by 360 is approximately where most people perceive a deflection as a visible bow. For a 36-inch shelf that is 0.10 inch.
Why does thickness matter more than depth?
Thickness appears cubed in the moment of inertia formula while depth appears only once. Doubling thickness reduces sag 8x; doubling depth reduces sag only 2x.
Why do closet shelves droop years after installation?
Creep: particleboard and MDF continue to deform under constant load over time. The instantaneous calculation understates the eventual sag. Design conservatively.
Does finish or paint affect stiffness?
No. Paint and lacquer add negligible stiffness. The structural modulus is unchanged by surface treatments.
What is the difference between point load and uniform load?
A single heavy object at center (point load) deflects about 1.6 times more than the same total weight spread uniformly. This calculator models the uniform case.
