Shelf Pin Layout Calculator

Lay out shelf-pin holes on the 32mm system: number of holes, spacing, top and bottom margins, and first and last hole positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 32 mm?

It is the European cabinet industry standard that lets line-boring machines, shelf-pin jigs, and hardware all share one grid. Off-the-shelf jigs and pins just work.

What pin and hole diameter should I use?

5 mm is the global metric standard for European shelf pins. 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) pins also exist but are not interchangeable. Pick one standard per project.

How deep do I drill?

Approximately 10-13 mm into a 3/4-inch panel. Deep enough to seat the pin securely, not so deep you break through. Always use a stop collar.

Can I use a 1-inch spacing instead of 32 mm?

You can with a shop-made jig, but you lose 32 mm-system compatibility with commercial hardware.

Do I need holes all the way from top to bottom?

No. Generous top and bottom margins look cleaner. Many builders bore only the middle two-thirds of the panel height.
